Dr. William A. Petri, Jr., M.D., Ph.D. is a physician-scientist who studies immunology and molecular pathogenesis of enteric infections and their consequences. He joined the University of Virginia faculty as an assistant professor in 1988 and is currently the Wade Hampton Frost Professor of Medicine and the Vice Chair for Research of the department of medicine. In addition to research efforts, he is deeply invested in training future clinicians and scientists; he co-directs the Infectious Disease Training Grant (T32) with Alison Criss. The scope of his research includes molecular parasitology of Entamoeba, innate immune host defense against Clostridium difficile, and in Bangladesh, acquired immunity to Cryptosporidium.
